Overall Competition Expectations

  • Structures will not cause harm to competitors and spectators.

  • Structures should be structurally sound and able to withstand natural elements. 

  • Teams need to be conscious of sharing the canyon trail with other competitors and spectators.​

  • No vandalism or destruction of other competitors and pre-existing structures.

  • Drugs and alcohol are not permitted.

 

  • Personal safety throughout the event is also important; please stay hydrated and respect the boundaries around event areas unless you are participating in an event or authorized to be within the boundaries. Close-toed shoes are required at all times. 

  • Fires are not permitted.

Natural Hazards in the Canyon

  • Be aware that there are rattlesnakes in the canyon, in addition to coyotes that live in the area. Larger wildlife will likely stay away due to the size of the event and are low-risk.​

  • Play stay in the vicinity of the event and only use designated trails. If you choose to explore the canyon further, we ask that you travel in a group for your safety.​

  • Our competition also has a mild bee hazard. If you have any bee-related allergies, please take necessary precautionary measures for your safety. Inform a staff member or volunteer if you need any accommodations.​​

  • The surrounding forest contains large amounts of poison oak. Please only use designated trails and paths to reduce the chance of contact..

Personal & Competition Safety

  • Water will be provided along the trail out to the canyon. We highly recommend the use of reusable water bottles as water cups are often short-handed.​

  • It is recommended that sunscreen is worn during the day and flashlights are brought for overnight stays.​

  • Cellular service is not guaranteed in the canyon. We advise you to travel in groups to ensure your safety.​​

  • In the event of an emergency or risk, please send a group member to contact a Design Village staff member immediately.​​​

  • We ask that when walking to and from the canyon, you stay on the right side of the path to avoid any collisions with other projects.​

  • Stick to the designated trails when transporting the project to and from the project site.​

  • Please be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Prohibited Items

  • Weapons (i.e. pocket knives, pepper spray, blades, bats, etc.)​

  • Drugs, drug paraphernalia, or any other illegal substances.​

  • Alcoholic beverages.​​

  • Incendiary materials (i.e. lighters, sparklers, fireworks, candles/incense, personal campfires).)​​​

  • Items with risk of fire (i.e. generators, gas-fired lanterns, non-LED lights, space heaters, and/or camping stoves).​

  • Noisemakers (i.e. megaphones, air horns, sirens).​
